Trends in family photos are always evolving
Lately, we’re seeing a shift away from the flowy boho maxi dresses that once dominated sessions. While those dresses were and still are popular for a reason (they’re flattering, forgiving, and photograph beautifully in motion), many moms today are craving something different. More personality, more comfort, and outfits that actually feel like them.

Think denim, overalls, corduroy, layered textures, and playful prints. And here’s the good news: casual outfits can photograph just as beautifully! The key is intention. Looser, more relaxed clothing can sometimes add visual bulk or read a little shapeless on camera if it’s not styled thoughtfully. That doesn’t mean clients should avoid them, it just means being mindful of fit, structure, and balance while giving your clients styling advice is crucial.

A slightly tucked top, a defined waistline, or pairing a relaxed piece with something more fitted can make all the difference.
When clients dress with their body type in mind, casual doesn’t have to mean frumpy. It can feel effortless, elevated, and completely true to them which is exactly what makes photos timeless in the first place.

So are dresses on their way out? No, but casual outfits are becoming mainstream again! As a photographer you just need to give them a little guidance! Because at the end of the day, the best outfit isn’t just what’s trending—it’s what makes clients feel confident showing up in front of the camera.
